In healthcare facilities, architecture and design require an extensive knowledge of medical regulations, clinical performance, and the intended patient experience. Even smaller projects mandate deep insight to deliver a healing, patient-centered environment. After successfully executing more than 30 projects with Penn Medicine-Lancaster General Health, TONO Group was selected to transform a transitional space within the renowned Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to support the practice’s growth. Located within a previous building expansion, the area housed two offices and an unused team workroom. Operating as the sole entity leading the project, TONO Group drew from our integrated project delivery process merging architectural development, interior design, and project management into a single-source experience. This approach enhanced efficiency and design consistency to ensure budget was maintained and that all initiatives were cohesive within the global Penn Medicine design standards.

OUR APPROACH

Working within the confines of an established space required strategic execution to ensure the new exam rooms met Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) standards for healthcare practices while optimizing the existing footprint. The area was built along an exterior masonry wall creating constraints when integrating the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure necessary to maintain required healthcare environmental controls. With careful planning FGI compliance was achieved without altering the existing footprint of the building.

OUTCOME

The new exam rooms feature a soothing palette of soft blues and grays balancing clinical care with a calming and comfortable patient experience. An unused workroom was also transformed into a new office space supporting an efficient staff workflow and maximizing what was once underutilized space. The completed project adds a functional office space and two licensed exam rooms to the comprehensive cancer care facility allowing them to further their mission of offering advanced oncology treatments and supportive services with personalized care.
