HEALTHCARE
VIRTUA MARNE HIGHWAY
Designing a healthcare facility requires a unique understanding of privacy, workflow, and aesthetics. For these reasons, when Virtua Health wanted to transform a building that had formally housed a law practice into a progressive cardiology outpatient center, they turned to longtime partner TONO Group. Having worked with Virtua since 2014, TONO brought years of insight into Virtua’s design standards, areas of concern, and knowledge of the optimal layouts for Virtua’s high quality of patient care.

OUR APPROACH
In this renovation, TONO’s goal was to keep as much of the existing infrastructure as possible, while merging it with the needs of a functional outpatient practice. This was challenged by the existing wide use of glazing throughout the building’s facade, which is not ideal for the desired level of patient privacy in exam rooms. The torus layout of the building added further planning challenges to creating optimal workflow for patients and staff during the design process. Given that cardiac patients would be the primary treatment focus for the facility, creating a logical, functional layout was a priority. The design team reviewed the programmatic needs and combined that with their working knowledge of past projects to provide recommendations to the Virtua practice leadership team.
OUTCOME
The resulting design creates efficient use of the space while also maintaining Virtua’s standards for layout and room sizes. The interior design team worked with Virtua facilities and marketing leaders to create a refreshed palette of colors making the facility bright and welcoming to patients and staff. Highlights included a new selection of tile throughout, carpet tile updates and accent lighting in the waiting room to complement the design.
