TONO GROUP

RESIDENTIAL
TREETOPS RESIDENCE
Crafting distinct, single-family residences is an intimate process that must consider not only the homeowners’ vision for aesthetic and quality but equally, how they intend to live within the space. When approached with the opportunity to transform the site of a former commercial masonry garage into a tranquil retreat, TONO Group pulled from their expertise in modern architecture and holistic planning strategies to engender the residence’s connection to its natural surroundings. As a turnkey architect-led operation, TONO Group provided a single-source solution leading the design, construction, and the curation of interiors for the new home. At 4,900 square feet, the home was carefully oriented along the ridgeline of the property’s wooded hillside to take advantage of southern exposure and to maximize panoramic views of a watershed located fifty feet below.

OUR APPROACH
Aptly coined, “Treetops,” the home’s modern design is centered around a striking collection of cantilevered forms and punctuated by a sleek, mono-pitch roof rising to the north. The unique design dramatically extends the home’s interior spaces into the surrounding tree canopy. Numerous outdoor living areas serve as an extension of the indoors through a fold-away glass door system. Floor-to-ceiling corner windows further blur the boundaries between the home and its surroundings while enabling daylight to flow throughout the interior spaces. A palette of rich, neutral colors and noble materials span the interior. Anchored by a collection of custom-fabricated and locally crafted furnishings and fixtures, the organic design is juxtaposed by bold details and metallic finishes creating a warmer interpretation of modern design.
OUTCOME
An innovative home automation system was seamlessly integrated within the home’s design providing intelligent operation without being obtrusive. The system intuitively controls all aspects of lighting, HVAC, audio/visual, and security. Proximity sensing and voice and gesture-based commands provide convenience and ease of use while features such as touchless shading and light sequencing adjust with natural solar cycles to support well-being and enhance energy efficiency. Sustainability benefits are also realized within the home’s building materials that include a precast concrete foundation, engineered wood framing, exterior siding comprised of recycled rice hull; and a ground-source, geo-thermal heating and cooling system that is paired with a high-efficiency boiler and combination forced air with radiant hydronic heating.
