Healthcare design is vital to patient well-being. The settings in which care is received can impact stress levels, recovery times, and overall patient satisfaction. Additionally, a well-designed healthcare environment can help to ensure privacy is maintained and efficient workflows are supported. When Penn Medicine sought to expand its Infusion Center to support their growing patient population, they turned to TONO Architects to rethink and implement new design standards for the facility. TONO had recently completed a similar project for a practice located on the medical campus. This experience combined with our expertise in integrated project delivery processes made us the ideal partner.

OUR APPROACH
TONO led all aspects of architectural development, project management, and interior design while working closely with leadership at Penn Medicine to ensure all outcomes were cohesive and strategically implemented within the broader corporate standards. Led by Sharlee Van Tine, AIA, LEED AP, the project was executed in two strategic phases, allowing the practice to remain fully operational, safe, and comfortable during construction. In phase one, TONO transformed an adjacent 5,600-square-foot medical suite providing a functional, compliant, and healing environment to relocate the Infusion Center while phase two was underway. In the second phase, the original 4,000-square-foot space was renovated to further increase the number of available infusion bays and expand the practice’s capabilities with private patient rooms.
OUTCOME
Now spanning nearly 10,000 square feet, the expanded facility is centered on patient experience. A soothing palette extends throughout the design drawing in shades of cool blues and grays with accents of rich, reclaimed wood paneling to establish a sense of calm throughout the space. Each infusion bay operates as an independent pod providing patients with privacy while streamlining staff access to equipment and supplies. With the infusion bays arranged around the outer perimeter of the room, the nurses’ station is positioned at the center to maximize patient visibility and allow staff to provide continuous care throughout the infusion. The interior design materials were carried throughout the practice from the reception area and into all treatment spaces, ensuring a seamless patient experience from the time of arrival.
